Irish stags for Irish lads

The Ultimate Limerick stag do

As the third largest city in Ireland, there's no such thing as a quiet night out in Limerick – you and the lads are in store for a brilliant weekend from the minute you arrive. Limerick has a somewhat gritty past, true, but the city has undergone a massive regeneration and boom in the past few years, after it was Ireland's very first Irish City of Culture. Now a down-to-earth, unpretentious city with plenty to offer the tourists that stop by on their way to more famous cities, Limerick and stag parties go together as well as Guinness and... well... everything.

If that wasn't enough, Limerick is also the sporting capital of Ireland – and has produced a great number of sporting sons that have represented the country. The Munster's might dominate the athletics scene, but gaelic football, golf, and, uh, the baton twirling isn't lacking either for lads with more varied interests. Association football and horse racing are very, very big too.

Limerick has been called the home of Irish rugby, so it's no surprise that both watching and playing is on the menu. They've also got a world class racecourse if you'd rather a little go for a little flutter, a golf course that's home to the Irish Golf Championships, and grounds for the unmissable Gaelic Games. There are plenty of old stag favourites too, if go karting or paintballing are more your speed.

Limerick Stag Nights

Limerick is a no nonsense city. There's no messing around with bendy straws and tiny umbrellas; the closest you'll come to a cocktail is a half-and-half. The locals are relaxed and friendly too, so there's every chance of a night of banter and craic ahead of you. With 365 pubs and enthusiastic and loud nightclubs, you and the lads have got enough for an entire stag year, let alone a stag weekend.

What's Hot

St Patrick's Day is always a brilliant time to visit one of Ireland's big cities and Limerick is no exception, but there are plenty of other times worth stopping by too. Riverfest is a firework heavy party... or stop by in August for the more unusual Kilbehenny Potato Festival. There are also rugby festivals, fringe festivals, and speed festivals for added va va voom.

If the potato festival doesn't sound quite your idea of a good time, there's plenty else to see. Limerick Gaelic Grounds are the home of Limerick's Gaelic football team, the University Arena is home to Ireland's first Olympic swimming pool and the 2010 Special Olympic Ireland Games, and Thormond Park, home of the Munsters, was recently voted the best rugby stadium in the world. If you ever tire of the sport scene, there's also the historic Maritime Museum, concert halls, theatres and cinemas.

Getting there...

Situated right in between major tourist hotspots Galway and Cork and as a hugely important sporting city in its own right, getting in to Limerick is easy enough for stags all over Ireland. There are railway lines running to main cities like Dublin, Belfast, Galway and Cork, as well as Waterford, Tralee and Ennis. If you'd rather go for a low cost coach option, Bus Eireann run from Cork, Dublin, Galway, Drogheda, Navan, Waterford, and a few other Irish cities. If you're driving, head south on the M18, north on the N20, west on the E20 or N24, or swim east along the river Shannon.

Limerick is easy enough to find your way around – it might be the third most populated city in Ireland, but it's not too big around the city centre, so you and the lads should be able to bar hop without problem to your hearts content.
